Welcome to the home page of Richard Tiplady Outdoors. I want to help you to move beyond your limits.

Introduction to the Wilds: If you want to develop your skills and confidence on the hills, I can help you.

As a teacher your emphasis throughout was not “I can do this” but “you can do this”, which was empowering (Claire, Brechin – night navigation course and ridge/scrambling course client)

Instruction was excellent, everything was well explained and it was a good learning environment, not worried to make mistakes (Greg, Strathclyde University Mountaineering Club)

Hill Skills and Mountain Skills: These two-day courses are designed for everyone from the complete beginner who has never been out in the hills to experienced hill walkers who want to reflect on and improve their skills and practice.

You explained everything well and patiently and the small size of the group made it a nice environment where we could all ask questions comfortably and learn (Beca, Strathclyde University Mountaineering Club)

Most beneficial was that I now feel confident in making decisions by myself when I’m in a tricky situation. I feel confident enough to go solo camping and hiking at some point this year! (Kenna, Netherlands)

Wild Spirit: I find the mountains to be a spiritual place, somewhere that stretches me beyond my limits and my sense of what I know.

Enriching, insightful and thought provoking. Exactly what I needed at this stage of my spiritual journey (retreat participant, Kilmalieu)

Richard is confident leading all sorts of people on adventures in the hills. His style is friendly and encouraging: he’s great at enabling people to achieve more than they thought they could. He has long experience of training people for Christian ministry so he is comfortable having God conversations, especially in the great outdoors. He is a very easy person to talk to (youth leader, Scottish Episcopal Church)

Wild Leadership: Spend some time in the Scottish wilderness, working on your leadership skills and challenges with a small group of other leaders.

The Wild Leadership course was exceptionally useful, leaving me with much to reflect on regarding my own leadership [and] resources for understanding the development of leadership thinking and practice (John, Hamilton)

The course design allowed ample time for reflection, which is so valuable. At big conferences, I end up feeling like a force-fed goose, stuffed with content and new social connections, with no time to digest any of it. This 48 hours of active learning naturally and easily made time for that (Claire, Brechin)
